beginners

We love to see the rise in popularity of Ultimate and the growth of the sport.

If you’re looking to start playing Ultimate, or you’re a very new player, we hold occasional beginner friendly sessions when we have adequate coaching resource to introduce people to the sport safely and provide a good experience for players at all levels. These will be indicated to you when you enrol.

Please note that outside of these sessions, our training is not suitable for beginners.

Beginer session FAQ's Beginner friendly sessions FAQ What do you mean by beginner? For the purposes of Brixton sessions, a beginner is anyone totally new to the sport or who has been playing for less than 6 months, or who cannot consistently throw a backhand and forehand. (These are the types of core skills we will be able to support people with at beginner friendly sessions.) Why are some sessions not suitable for beginners? In order to prepare for competitive events like Tour, we plan to focus most Saturday training sessions on advanced skills. When someone is unable to execute those advanced skills it can be unsafe for them or other players, it is not a useful or positive experience for them, and it impacts the value of the session for all players. This approach will help to offer the best and safest experience for everyone, no matter their ability. How are the beginner friendly sessions different? Beginner friendly sessions are a normal Saturday training session where we will have enough coaching resource to also teach core skills like throwing, catching and basic gameplay. How do I know which sessions are beginner friendly? They are marked on the attendance sheet on the Brixton Hub as ‘yes’ in the ‘suitable for beginners’ row. Please check you are signing up to appropriate sessions, and always sign up to let us know you will be attending. Where else can I play Ultimate / how can I learn quicker? Have a look here for pick-up games: https://pickupultimate.com/map/city/london. We also highly recommend lots of throwing time, so it’s as easy as grabbing a friend and a disc and heading to a park! I’m an experienced player, are the beginner friendly sessions open to me? Yes! They are normal Saturday sessions with drills and games for all, but planned with enough resource for us to safely welcome new players too.
